Dorenda's Story
In May of 2000, after nearly 10 years working as a Cook County Deputy Sheriff, ​Dorenda decided to leave law enforcement to pursue a career in financial ​services with a dream to become the first African American woman to own and ​operate a successful financial services company in the Roseland community to ​help bridge the gap between poverty and prosperity.
Her decision to leave the Sheriff’s department was a combination of stress and ​failure in the judicial system but also a result of the numerous conversations she ​would have with inmates whenever asked; what brought you here.
These deep personal conversations with inmates made her realize there was a ​connection between poverty and crime in the black community and she believed ​there was a far better use for her talent than to spend her life turning the key on ​jail cells and on the black family.
Leaving a secure income was extremely difficult and starting a new career in financial services ​where pay was based on sales was much different than she had imagined. Her goal to open her ​own financial services company ended nearly as quickly as it started.
When Dorenda found herself unemployed, divorced, raising her child single-handedly and a ​domestic violence survivor, her dream of helping others succeed in life financially seemed too far ​away to reach, but hard work and dedication won.
For the next four years, debt and depression consumed her.
In 2019, Vested Interest Financial Group, LLC was formed and today, Dorenda is ​committed more than ever, to serve underrepresented communities nationwide h​elping to bridge the gap and change the narrative for our youth and our f​uture.
Today, Dorenda is an author, public speaker, and workshop facilitator and is known for her straight-to-the-point style on her Get Your Money Right! YouTube channel, where she discuss money, mindset, and the mayhem that blocks you from reaching your full potential.
